The Spoils of War

This was my sixth and seventh figure and my second multi-figure diorama in 120mm scale. I based this diorama on a photograph which it follows closely. The figures are primarily Sculpty on wire armatures.

The wine bottles are recasts of a bottle I purchased at a miniatures shop. To make these, I made a mold of the original, tinted some clear casting resin with green oil paint, and made several copies.

The wooden crates the two figures are seated upon were cast in resin. I made an original of just one side of a crate out of basswood, then made a mold of it. Then I cast six identical pieces for each crate and glued them together to form the completed crates.

The flag is Sculpty also. I kneaded a ball of Sculpty until it was workable and then flattened it to about 1/8 inch thickness using a rolling pin. Next, I printed out a Nazi flag to scale and lay it on top of the Sculpty sheet. Using a straight pin, I punched through the paper into the Sculpty following the outlines of the Swastika and the circle around it. Then I removed the paper, made a light indentation with a sculpting knife, following the pin marks, in the clay. I formed the flag over the legs of the figure, baked it, and painted it using the light indentations as a painting guide.

The figures are painted with acrylic paints and shaded and highlighted with oils. The background is a B/W photo taken in a German city at the end of WW2.
